TAS:Rock throwing may cancel Hobart bus routes
HOBART, Aug 25 AAP - A spate of rock throwing incidents may force Hobart's public bus
operator to cancel routes in the city's northern suburbs.
Metro Tasmania said buses travelling through Bridgewater and Gagebrook have been hit
and damaged by rocks in the past few weeks.
"Despite working closely with Tasmania Police for the past fortnight, the rock-throwing
has continued," Metro CEO Heather Haselgrove said.
"At this stage, only buses have been damaged. No one travelling on or driving a bus
has been hurt."
Ms Haselgrove said the company will consider terminating buses before they reach the
affected suburbs.
"Metro's main priority is the safety of passengers and staff. If the rock-throwing
does not stop, Metro will suspend services travelling through Bridgewater and Gagebrook,"
she said.
"Any suspension of services is regrettable. However, Metro must act in the best interests
of passenger and driver safety."

ACT:Shot man wearing mask
Police say they couldn't use capsicum spray to subdue a man who was shot dead by officers
in Canberra yesterday .. because he was wearing a mask.
The ACT's deputy police chief BRUCE HILL says police called to a domestic at a house
in the southern suburb of Wanniassa early yesterday believed they had the situation under
control.
They'd talked to the 27-year-old man who's been named as NATHAN DOHERTY .. at the house
for half an hour .. before he allegedly emerged clutching a knife and a meat cleaver.
Commander HILL says the man who'd been shot and wounded by police in similar circumstances
three years ago .. ignored orders to disarm and was fatally shot as he lunged at a sergeant.
He's told ABC radio capsicum spray wouldn't have worked because the man had his face
protected .. but a taser .. carried by tactical response police in the ACT .. might have.

Vic: Labor candidate not claiming McEwen win yet
MELBOURNE, Dec 10 AAP - Labor candidate Rob Mitchell says he is not prepared to claim
victory in the Victorian federal seat of McEwen, despite counting showing he has won by
a tiny seven-vote margin.
The result was finalised at the weekend and is the second closest in a federal election
in Australian history.
Former tourism and small business minister Fran Bailey, who has held McEwen since 1996,
will request a recount.
"I won't claim it until I get the phone call from the AEC (Australian Electoral Commission)
saying they've declared it," Mr Mitchell said.
The AEC said it would consider the request, but a spokesman said re-counts did not
automatically follow just because a result was close.

Fed: Economic growth picked up: Macfarlane=3
Mr Macfarlane said it was clear the May interest rate rise, and higher petrol prices,
had not knocked around the economy too much.
"While the pick up has not been excessive, the general message from the growth in employment
and consumer spending was that the household sector is still in good shape and has not
retreated into its shell as a result in the rises of petrol prices and the May interest
rate increase.
"The fact that borrowing by the household and business sectors has accelerated over
the last six months or so confirmed this general picture."
Mr Macfarlane said the bank's recent three increases in interest rates were still working
their way through the economy.
He said he was still optimistic about the global economy, and this could then feed
inflation into the Australian economy.
A fall of commodity prices from their current very high levels would provide some relief,
he said, while the recent lifts in monetary policy could also bring down inflation.
Mr Macfarlane said there was still a chance the sharp drop in consumer sentiment may
continue to fall.
"It has fallen significantly over the last two years," he said.
"I wouldn't be anywhere as confident that it's just going to bounce back again.
"The consumer, while they haven't gone into their shell, have certainly slowed their
spending down, and they may slow it by more, we don't know."

Aug. 10-- HOLLYWOOD'S NET LOSS INCREASES: Hollywood Entertainment's second quarter earnings show why the company is shuttering the Internet sales it once heralded at the company's Reel.com subsidiary.
On Wednesday, Wilsonville-based Hollywood -- the parent of Hollywood Video stores -- reported a net loss of $63.04 million, or $1.37 a share, on sales of $322.64 million for the quarter ended June 30. That compares with a net loss of $8.33 million, or 18 cents a share, on sales of $250.37 million in the year-ago quarter.
Hollywood's loss happened when a profit at its video rental stores was devoured by mounting debt at its Reel.com subsidiary. In the second quarter, Hollywood Video logged a profit of $6.5 million on sales of $310.66 million, compared with a profit of $9.4 million on sales of $241.98 million in the second quarter of 1999. But Reel.com lost $69.54 million on sales of $11.98 million in the just-ended quarter, a big drop from its net loss of $17.73 million on sales of $8.39 million last year.
But, $48.55 million of Reel.com's loss comes from a one-time charge Hollywood took to cover the costs of shutting down the subsidiary's Web-sales operation. Hollywood will still run the Reel.com Web site, but only as a marketing and information site. Mark Wattles, Hollywood chairman and chief executive officer, said that closing Reel.com will end a $5 million monthly cash drain and should make Hollywood a profitable company again.
WILSHIRE FINANCIAL SERVICES GROUP: Wilshire Financial Services Group earned $1.125 million, or 6 cents a share, in its second quarter ended June 30.
In the same period a year ago, excluding extraordinary gain on the extinguishment of debt and restructuring costs from the company's Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization, Wilshire Financial lost $5.5 million.
Wilshire Financial operates a Southern California thrift, it buys loans and residential mortgage-backed securities and it services sub-prime loans.
WAL-MART STORES: Wal-Mart Stores announced second-quarter results and said fiscal third-quarter profit will be less than analysts' forecasts as the world's largest retailer changes the way it accounts for goods bought on installment plans.
Second-quarter net income jumped 28 percent to $1.6 billion, or 36 cents a share, from $1.25 billion, or 28 cents a share, a year ago. Per-share profit matched the average estimate of analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial. Sales jumped 20 percent to $46.1 billion from $38.5 billion.
Wal-Mart dropped $4 to $53.63 on the New York Stock Exchange. Third-quarter profit will be about 31 cents a share, 2 cents below the average estimate of analysts polled by First Call. The shortfall will be made up in the fourth quarter, the company said.
Wal-Mart left its annual forecast unchanged. The average profit estimate of analysts for the year is $1.47 a share. Last year, Wal-Mart earned $5.38 billion, or $1.20 a share.
