ACT:Shot man wearing mask
Police say they couldn't use capsicum spray to subdue a man who was shot dead by officers
in Canberra yesterday .. because he was wearing a mask.
The ACT's deputy police chief BRUCE HILL says police called to a domestic at a house
in the southern suburb of Wanniassa early yesterday believed they had the situation under
control.
They'd talked to the 27-year-old man who's been named as NATHAN DOHERTY .. at the house
for half an hour .. before he allegedly emerged clutching a knife and a meat cleaver.
Commander HILL says the man who'd been shot and wounded by police in similar circumstances
three years ago .. ignored orders to disarm and was fatally shot as he lunged at a sergeant.
He's told ABC radio capsicum spray wouldn't have worked because the man had his face
protected .. but a taser .. carried by tactical response police in the ACT .. might have.
