SA: Woomera escapees appear in court

ADELAIDE, April 2 AAP - Thirty Woomera detention centre escapees appeared in a packedAdelaide Magistrates Court today.

The 30 men - Afghans, Iraqis, Iranians, and Turks - who escaped from the outback facilityduring mass protests over Easter, have been charged under the Federal Immigration Act.

They were all granted bail by the court, but would have to return to immigration detention.

Their bail conditions entitled them to leave detention and move interstate if grantedtemporary visas by the immigration department.

They appeared before the court individually or in pairs and were greeted with wavesand cheers from supporters, who had earlier chanted, played drums and held banners outsidethe courthouse.

Many of the supporters had also been involved in the weekend protests at Woomera.

Up to seven uniformed police officers stood watching proceedings in the courtroom atany one time, as well as court security officers, although they did not need to take anyaction.

Magistrate Fred Field had to call for quiet in the courtroom several times.

Some detainees responded to gestures of support by waving and blowing kisses as theywere told their bail conditions by interpreters.
