Vic: Libs pledge to boost DNA testing
MELBOURNE, Aug 11 AAP - The Victorian Liberal Party today continued its tough-on-crimepitch with a pledge to boost DNA testing funds by $28 million if elected.
A massive backlog of cases currently meant DNA samples taken from a burglary scenemight not be analysed for 18 months, opposition police spokesman Kim Wells said.
"A Napthine government will ensure our forensic centre operates at world's best practice, with well-trained staff and the latest forensic DNA test facilities and equipment," hesaid.
Mr Wells said the pledge was part of the Liberal Party's bid to dramatically cut crimein Victoria.
A Liberal government would increase funding to the Victorian Forensic Science Centreby $28 million, boost DNA sample tests from 300 to 1,500 a week, and increase the numberof people working on the tests from 19 to 60.
Acting Premier John Thwaites said the Liberals could not be trusted to keep their electioncommitments.
He said a backlog of DNA testing, caused by the testing of more than 3,000 prisoners, had been completed and any urgent tests were given priority.
"There has been a boost to DNA testing under the Bracks government and we would considerthat to continue," he told reporters.
